A breath of fresh air in the market forflame-retardant polyamides

Over the past few years, the market for flame-retardant, glass-fibre reinforced polyamides has shown steady growth. The majority of products currently in use are based on PA 6 or PA 66 grades - modified with red phosphorous (PA 66) or halogenated flame retardants. Red phosphorous in particular combines good flow properties with high mechanical values while light-coloured and visible parts are often created using halogenated products. Alternative materials containing no halogen or red phosphorous were previously relegated to a niche existence due to reduced flame-retardant capabilities (UL 94 V-2) or lower mechanical values.

New regulations call for rethinking
New regulations in the E&E industry, such as the EC Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (valid from August 2005), will increase the price of components containing halogenated products due to the required separate disposal procedures.
Use of these products is also becoming more difficult in the electric appliance industry following increased glow wire requirements in addition to the recognised aggressive action of red phosphorous during processing (e.g. tool corrosion) and application (e.g. contact corrosion).

Flame retardant while environmentally compatible: Grilon TSG-30/4 V0
With Grilon TSG-30/4 V0 EMS has developed an innovative product which combines the good properties of established products and fulfils future legislative safety requirements and environmental regulations.

Grilon TSG-30/4 V0 (available under the designation XE 5017) is characterised by the following property profile:

- Flammability class: UL 94 V-0 from wall thicknesses of 0.8 mm / 5VA at 1.6 mm
- Contains no halogen or red phosphorous (compliant with WEEE and RoHS)
- High glow wire resistance (GWIT 775°C from 1.0 mm)
- Excellent mechanical properties
- Excellent comparative tracking index
- Light inherent colour
- Suitable for laser marking
- Easy processing

This overall unequalled property profile makes Grilon TSG-30/4 V0 first choice in the classical application fields of energy distribution, electrical appliances and micro-electronics. The product has proved to be of great interest and is becoming increasingly established in areas where the new legislative guidelines can no longer be satisfied by previously used products.
